What are hormonal disorders?
Hormones are extremely important chemical messengers that regulate many critical bodily functions. Hormonal disorders occur when there are abnormalities in the levels of these hormones, leading to disruption of normal processes. Some key things to know:
- Hormonal disorders can be caused by issues with the glands that produce hormones, such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, and ovaries/testes. Diseases of these glands can lead to over- or under-production of hormones.
- They may also be caused by problems with hormone receptors - the proteins on cells that receive and respond to hormones. If receptors are faulty, cells can't properly respond to hormones.
- Some common symptoms of hormonal imbalances include fatigue, weight gain/loss, hot flashes, hair loss, and changes in appetite and sleep. However, symptoms depend on the specific hormone affected.
Some major categories of hormonal disorders include:
- Thyroid disorders - The thyroid helps regulate growth, metabolism, and development. Both underactive (hypothyroidism) and overactive (hyperthyroidism) thyroids can cause issues.
- Diabetes - This is a disorder where the body can't properly regulate blood sugar levels due to insulin problems. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes qualify as hormonal disorders.
- Adrenal disorders - The adrenal glands produce cortisol, aldosterone, and other hormones. Too much cortisol over time can lead to Cushing's syndrome. Too little aldosterone causes Addison's disease.
- Reproductive disorders - These affect fertility and the menstrual cycle. Common examples include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), early menopause, and testosterone deficiency.
The great news is that many hormonal disorders can be managed with lifestyle changes, hormone therapy, and medications if needed. Getting the right treatment can get hormones back in balance and help you feel like yourself again!
